Vegan Dog Foods & Treats

  • Evolution Diet vegan dog food http://www.evolutiondietstore.com (Note that Evolution diet dry kibble is designed to be served with water added to it. They do not emphasize this point very strongly but this is highly recommended in order to prevent medical problems with crystals in the urinary tract. Contains taurine, which some companies do not and may be beneficial. Does not contain l-carnitine, which I suggest supplementing where absent.)
  • Natural Balance Vegetarian Formula For Dogs (kibble). http://www.naturalbalanceinc.com/dogformulas/Vegetarian.html (This is a very popular food but my experience is that some dogs do not tolerate it at all while others do. Among those that do, they may tolerate it for as long as you use it or they may suddenly stop tolerating it. If it starts causing diarrhea and/or vomiting, you may want to immediately switch to a different food. If your dog tolerates it, that is great because otherwise, it seems like a good formulation and is readily available. Contains Taurine and l-canitine, which some companies do not and may be beneficial. Does not contain any of the major common allergens.)
  • V-dog Crunch Nuggets. http://www.v-dogfood.com . (I hear good things about this one. Does not contain taurine or l-carnitine, which I suggest supplementing where absent. Contains some common allergens, but this is not to say they will necessarily be problematic. You may want to supplement. Scroll to bottom of this page for supplements.).
  • Benevo Duo Vegan Dog Food: Canned (Their dry dog food has D3 rather than D2 making it not vegan but this canned product uses D2.) (UK): http://www.veggiepets.com/acatalog/benevo_duo_vegan_pet_food.html
  • Natural Life Vegetarian Dog Formulahttp://www.nlpp.com/vegetariandogfoods.htm . (Does not contain taurine or l-carnitine, which I suggest supplementing where absent.).
  • PetGuard Organic Vegetarian Vegan Entree Canned Food for Dogs http://www.petguard.com/dog-products/canned-food/organic-vegetarian-entr-e-vegan . (Does not contain taurine or l-carnitine, which I suggest supplementing where absent.).
  • Evanger's Super Premium Vegetarian Dinner (Canned) http://www.evangersdogfood.com/dog/20101.html . (There were some safety questions with their certification a while back. (Does contain taurine but not l-carnitine, which I suggest supplementing where absent.).
  • Yarrah Organic Vegetarian Dog Food http://www.veggiepets.com/acatalog/yarrah_organic_vegetarian_dog_food.html. (Does not identify the specific vitamins or minerals. May not contain taurine or l-carnitine, which I suggest supplementing where absent.)
  • Ami Complete Vegan Dog Food http://www.veggiepets.com/acatalog/ami_dog_food.html (From web site: "Ami use a synthetic form of Vitamin D3 which is vegan (made from vegetable derived cholesterol) rather than the commonly used form derived from lanolin." I do not have independent verification of the truth of this statement but they make a strong and clear statement on their web site regarding it.)
  • Lively Doggie Vegan Dog Food http://www.thecelestialshop.com/shop/product_info.php?products_id=657 . (I've not heard anything about this one as yet. Does contain taurine but not l-carnitine, which I suggest supplementing where absent.).
  • SunnyPaw Heavenly Sweets Natural Snacks http://www.SunnyPaw.com (These treats are great! My dog loves them. They are organic and made with the best ingredients. Simply wonderful!)
  • Wow-Bowhttp://www.wow-bow.com/fromourbakery.html/ . (Treats)
  • Max & Ruffy's vegan dog treats http://maxandruffys.com/

MAYBE Vegan Dog Foods*

*We have not been able to confirm that these are vegan or not. Usually, the vitamin D and A sources are suspect. For some vegans, these kinds of minute sources are not ideal but not a deal breaker either, particularly if they are the only food available that is otherwise vegan.)

NOT Vegan Dog Foods*

* Marketed as "Vegan" or vegetarian foods that are NOT vegan or NOT balanced and complete.
